Risk Factors that Contribute to Road Accidents - Insurance Telematics

Studies have shown that the riskiest driving behaviour reported in the first half of 2020 are :
  • device distractions from cellphone usage
  • smoking (lighting a cigarette while driving)
  • eating and drinking behind the wheel (food and drink consumption while driving)
  • drivers not using seat belts
  • anticipation (moments of late response to a situation)

Data on the most widespread risky behaviours for delivery drivers attained that there is a tendency related to distracted driving were still leading factor among other dangerous habits, according to a report compiled by Lytx and Nexyad.
Another risk factor identified by the Nexyad driving behaviour engine is the unstructured and slight differences to our current road infrastructure. The Nexyad engine takes into account the shape of roads, and map attributes including  Points Of Interest (POIs), intersections and road curvature (winding road, school zone, pedestrian crossing, railway, etc.).

The riskiest behaviour reported in 2020 were cellphone/device distractions, the consumption of food or beverages while driving, drivers not using seat belts, smoking, and moments of late response, which Lytx defines as when a driver was not distracted, yet responded late and abruptly to a readily visible risky situation ahead.
Incorporating map attributes, allows the Nexyad engine to calculate the drivers' risk at realtime, which enables the driver to modify their behaviour during their journey, hence preventing accidents.
The Nexyad solution provides the driver with alerts of plausible risk before an accident becomes eminent.

With the use of the Lytx solution, they had reported the improvements in driving behaviours with their machine vision solution.  Lytx has reported an increase of 19% in distractions from cellphone/devices in comparison to 2018 data and moments of late response improved 22% during the same period.  Nexyad solution has reported an accident reduction rate of 20% by alerting the driver on anticipated risk ahead.  Meanwhile, posted speed violations improved 30% in 2019 from 2018 with the Lytx machine vision solution.
